There are five soil health principles recognized globally. These principles can be put into action on any farm, any soil and any region. However, none of them will be successful without the "6th" rule or principle of CONTEXT. Meaning soil health has the same goals with different roads to get there for each grower.

Minimizing soil disturbance is a good start to rebuilding soil aggregates, pore spaces, soil glue, and soil organic matter. This is an essential step for long term soil productivity. Reduce organic matter degradation, save fuel, labor and equipment costs. Promote diverse microbial communities and reduce the potential for soil erosion.

Minimize evaporation losses, regulate surface temperature, reduce exposure to wind and water erosion and suppress weeds.

Increase diversity of microbial communities while reducing disease environment. Reduce insect pressure and decreases the need for fertilizer inputs. Diverse crop rotations mimic our original plant diversity landscapes. They are important to the long term sustainability of soil resources and food security.

Continually feeds the diverse microbial communities. Captures and sequesters carbon whenever possible. Creates more channels for water infiltration and air exchange. Builds stronger soil aggregates. Facilitates rapid carbon sequestration. Grazes cover crops for costs offset. Improves nutrient cycling and microbial communities. Increases farm diversity and revenue per acre. Mimics natural design. Grazing of cover crops and crop residue increases the soil biological activity on cropland, and improves nutrient cycling. Proper grassland management improves soil health. Diverse crop rotations mimic our original plant diversity landscapes. They are important to the long term sustainability of soil resources and food security.

Context is everything. While each principle can be added to an operation, how the soil health principles are put into action will look different across the country. Identifying where a grower wants to make the greatest impact, will help prioritize which principle to put into practice and within the context of that grower's goals and needs.
